Being surrounded by water, Florida is the home of many land and water-based lighthouses. These lighthouses played a critical role in Florida’s history; making it possible to explore, settle and develop Florida by using its 1350 miles of coastline (second only to Alaska in states with longest ocean coastline). Only 29 lighthouses remain today. Here are many of the structures we found. At times, we found structures relocated or isolated where access was limited. The real joy was exploring Florida in places most residents do not travel and seeing some of Old Florida.
