@Yulee Sugar Mill - Homasassa (1851)

After an uneventful but enjoyable time exploring Cedar Key Fishing Village with Richard and Sharleen) , we decided we would visit the ruins at Yulee Sugar Mill near Homasassa on the way Hudson and learn a little Florida history and view the structures that remained.

The Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park in Homasassa preserves a small reminder of the once remarkable empire of David Levy Yulee, Florida's first United States Senator. The Yulee Sugar Mill began operating in 1851 to process the sugar cane grown by Yulee in the rich lowlands along the Homasassa River. The machinery was brought in by ship from New York and included a state of the art steam engine which drove the grinding machinery. Read more about the history here.

@ Ponce Inlet

 Surf's up in Ponce Inlet, just south of Daytona Beach. Along with awesome waves, Ponce Inlet is best known for being home to Florida's tallest lighthouse and a marine science center with interactive exhibits, a boardwalk, observation tower and nature trails. At 175 feet and with 203 steps, the lighthouse in Ponce Inlet offers a nice workout for those craving some exercise, but don't be intimidated. The climb is totally doable, even for kids. And the view is more than worth it! Later, be sure to relax along one of Ponce Inlet’s gorgeous beaches, perfect for walking, jogging, sunning and shelling.

The Lighthouse: completed in 1887, replacing the former lighthouse (built in 1835, it had collapsed into the inlet the following year), the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station was built when the area was known as Mosquito Inlet. After decades of restoration by the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association, it stands today as one of the best preserved light stations in the nation.

As the photo theme 'Lighthouses' continued in 2017 to today, the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse was one we captured when we visited Daytona Beach. What grabbed our attention was the lighthouse was the tallest of all the lighthouses and a nice photo 'catch'. We were so focused on the lighthouse that we never explored the town itself or any nearby communities. When 'in the area' we will have to explore Ponce for historic and/or unique sites.

Photo Opportunities:
  • The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse
  • Guard station
  • View from the light panorama
