Brooksvile

Fort DeSoto, established about 1840 to give protection to settlers from Native Americans, was located at the northeastern edge of present-day Brooksville on Croom Road about one-half mile east of U.S. Highway 41. The fort was also a trading post and a regular stop on the Concord stagecoach line which ran from Palatka to Tampa. (Wiki)

The City of Brooksville was incorporated in 1880.  The early economy of Brooksville was based on agriculture - including cotton - and several large plantations were in the area. The area was the scene of many violent racial incidents in the years after the Civil War and on into the 1930s. Read the history of Hernando County. (Florida Back Roads Tavel)

We visit Brooksvile every year to have our taxes signed with our accountant. I always bring a camera 'just in case' a photo opportunity presents itself (even though my mobile camera is with me), and I most often I see and capture something during each 'pass through'. Each year we keep aware of an annual photo event (at least for me) called the Brooksvile Raid, a Civil War Reenactment - the largest reenactment in Florida.

Unfortunately, after 40 years, the Tampa Bay Council of the Boy Scouts of America, owners of the 1,300-acre Sand Hill Scout Reservation, the event’s home since 1991, decided not to renew the agreement with event co-sponsors. Why? “Ultimately, the committee determined it was not in the best interest of the scout council to continue.” He provided no other specifics. Those who would comment offered a)
the recent racial unrest across the country, and b) fear of it being a racist event. Others feel and are saddened at the cancel culture that’s now encroached to our country.”
