Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island - lighthouse and state's oldest bar

Fernandina Beach: The "Isle of 8 Flags" may have been controlled by eight different nations. It's been an incorporated town here, in Florida since 1825. The history of this city in Northeast Florida goes much, much farther back. Many of the 19th-century buildings remain in the charming downtown district. Click 'Resources' for additional Fernandina Beach details and photo opportunities. "This enchanting Victorian seaport village was once a stomping ground for pirates, Gilded Age millionaires, bootleggers, shrimpers, and other colorful characters" (see guide below)

In Fernandina Beach of shops and restaurants (our dining experience here was Tasties - a burger and hot dog joint in an abandoned gas station). Weather becoming chilled, we decided to check out the town, the bar etc. and take our time to travel south towards St Augustine (continued in St Augustine post)

Very nice town with shops and dining. Walking the streets, visiting the church and having a drink in Florida's Oldest Bar - the Palace Saloon, makes it worth the trip. Don't forget, a short drive away is the lighthouse on the Amelia island  he which you must catch at sunrise! Note: this lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Florida and is located inside the fence of the US Government area (but if you're adventurous you may find a gap/hole in the fence).
