Georgia - Florida ... Jelkyl Island (draft) ... URL Info

(Jan '15) After over 9 months of deciding on a destination for a 3-4 day road trip, we chose a photo safari to Jekyl Island, Georgia. We selected Driftwood Beach on Jekyl Island as our distant destinations because a) it was an easy travel of about 330 miles and b) it was an interesting nature presentation of huge trees that dotted a mile stretch of the Georgia Island. In mapping out the trip, we included stops in spleen
(Amelia Island), the Kingsley Slave Mansion, St Augustine and drop-by at Rick and Vana's in Pomona Park. (click the photos below for full size images and here for all photos).

On Jekyl Island, Driftwood Beach we observed during the magic photography hour (1/2 hour before sunset and 1/2 hour after sunset) beautiful scenes of ocean, landscape and natural lighting. This was followed up by dinner at a resort Bistro and prep for the sunrise photo captures the next day. From Jekyl Island, our journey took us to Amelia Island and the Historic district in Fernandina, Florida for a walking tour of shops and restaurants (our dining experience here was Tasties - a burger and hot dog joint in an abandoned gas station). Weather becoming chilled, we decided to casually travel south towards St Augustine and make a business visit to Paul at Goin' Postal. We asked Paul for directions to the hotel we were to stay at ... and all he could recommend was 'WHY NOT TRY SOMETHING ELSE'". Upon arriving at the an area that was like the inner city of Detroit, we elected to make phone calls, beg, tell false stories (we had an emergency - our son was about to give birth ... they accepted our cancellation and we decided to go directly to St Augustine. We did and were glad we did.

Thursday morning we had breakfast and headed to downtown St Augustine - the Old City. It was bitter cold, yet Mom was a champ and we walked the shops and main street to see what we could. About 12 noon, we knew that San Sebastian would have their wine tour and tasting and we proceeded there. As luck was with us, we did not have to participate in the tour - YES!!! When the tasting was over we returned to the car and headed straight off to Rick and Vana's for a catch up of family events, a tour of Rick's projects and my replacement of their smoke alarm batteries (located in the cathedral ceiling - Rick is not a ladder person). Now we look forward to February's Trip on a Tankful (or two) ... maybe the Panhandle.
